New Musical Director announced!

Editorial Press Release in the Shropshire Star – 24 April 2010

Conductor Selected for Choir in Area

A Shropshire choirmaster has landed a job as conductor with a group which has been going for more than 40 years in the county.

Members from Much Wenlock Male Voice Choir auditioned four candidates and musicologist Paul Kelly came out on top.

Richard Lawson, spokesman for the choir, said the decision was made public at its 41st annual general meeting on April 20.

He said: “Four of the candidates submitted themselves to the ordeal of a trial by audition and their personal compatibility with the full choir. Paul’s appointment was unanimously endorsed by the choir members at one of their recent rehearsal meetings.”

He added Mr. Kelly would run on boldly with the baton passed to him by Ceri Constantine, the retiring musical director who celebrated more than 40 years in the post during 2009.

“Mr. Kelly brings a wealth of experience and a very high level of qualification to the post. He was identified following an exhaustive search and screening of possible candidates that produced very strong and enthusiastic individuals,” he added.

New members are welcome to the choir on Tuesday evenings at the William Brookes School in Much Wenlock at 7.30 pm.

Mr. Kelly’s debut will form part of the renowned Much Wenlock Festival which will take place in Holy Trinity Church, Much Wenlock, on 11 June at 7.30 pm.
